How to search for terms in the Parliamentary Glossary

  • Type the search item or items in the search field, such as "Member of Parliament".
  • Press Enter or click the Search button./span>
  • You can truncate the search items at the beginning or end using the asterisk: *speaker*
  • To browse the terms alphabetically, type "a" or some other character and press Enter or click the Search button.

If you click the Search button, the system will search through the terms associated with the concept. All the terms beginning with the search item are shown. A list of the terms starting with the search item or character string you entered will be shown in the left-hand column of the search results list. When you click the search items, you will see the terms associated with the concept involved, its definition (♦ ) term note (  ■), source, style and the equivalent terms in other languages. If the search item is a term that appears in the Glossary, it will be shown in the right-hand column. Near matches looks up words that resemble the search item you typed when pronounced. When Near matches is activated, the truncation sign is *.

If you click the Search all button, the system will search the following fields: terms, definitions, term notes, style indications and sources. The truncation sign is *. The search results will show the search item in the context in which it appears in the Glossary. Search results can be sorted in five sequences: according to the hierarchy used in the Glossary; in alphabetical order according to the main search item; in alphabetical order according to the search item found; or in alphabetical order according to the word preceding or following the search item found. To change the order, choose the preferred sequence in the pull-down list and confirm it by clicking the Refresh list button. To modify the width and length of the list of search results, change the values at the top of the list and refresh it. To remove the search list, click the Close button.

Click the Advanced search button to access the search form that will allow you to narrow the search to specific fields, languages, etc. When the Search item field is selected, the system looks up terms, when the Explanation field is selected, the system looks up definitions and term notes, and when the Additional information field is selected, the system looks up source and style data. A single character in the search strings can be replaced by a question mark ? and several characters by an asterisk *. Search items can be combined using the logical operators AND, OR, NEAR and BEFORE. Match exactly is case-sensitive and does not process any wild cards. More search instructions Advanced search

Use the Limit Search function to select the language in which the search items are to be looked up and the search results shown. This will allow you to limit the search to the preferred languages. If you wish, you can set this as the default.
